03 / THE REAL THINKING (YES, REALLY)

Thought through
before it's built.

Unlike a generic template, this argument is written around the buyer and the evidence they'd actually need.

Treat the referral journey and owner journey as separate products.

A referring veterinary surgeon and a worried pet owner may visit the same hospital website, but they need different information. The referring clinician wants case criteria, available specialties and an efficient handover. The animal owner wants to understand the visit, the team and the practical arrangements. A referral website should respect both.

We would organise specialist services with clear indications for referral, who reviews cases, how records are transferred and what owners can expect after a referral. The website can present named clinical teams and relevant accreditations where verified. For owners, language should be warm but measured: no promise of treatment success, no diagnosis online and no ambiguous claims about emergency availability. For referrals, avoid a form that silently collects medical details into an unsuitable marketing inbox.

The referral route must work under pressure

A vet who needs to refer an animal will look for disciplines offered, acceptance criteria, opening arrangements, emergency instructions and an appropriate method of transferring notes. A pet owner wants to know where the referral takes place, who will explain options, how costs are discussed and what happens afterwards.

Put I’m a referring vet and I’m a pet owner near the top. The veterinary route should avoid an ordinary unsecured marketing form for medical history. The pet-owner route should explain preparation and contact details without implying emergency cover if none is provided.

Build a real information checklist, not just a reassuring design

The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s Veterinary Services Market Investigation Order 2026 creates staged transparency requirements. For larger businesses (15 or more practices), practice information and price-list requirements generally take effect from the first working day after 22 December 2026; for smaller businesses (14 or fewer practices), similar requirements have a later March 2027 deadline. The exact articles and applicability depend on business model and service type. We must check the relevant order and practice circumstances rather than using one universal publication date.

That distinction is commercially useful for a website build: each client needs an owner for fees, professional qualifications, service details and out-of-hours information, plus a process to keep them current. It is not a promise that a £5,000 website constitutes regulatory compliance.

Referral clarity is the real design test

Give a practising clinician a scenario and ask whether they can find the right referral contact in two or three steps. Give a new pet owner the same test for location, costs and next steps. This is a better quality criterion than page-load theatrics, although responsive performance and accessibility still matter.

Referral and practice information to verify

Confirmed service lists, team qualifications and accreditations; precise location and opening information; approved price-list or service information where required; verified out-of-hours processes. UK veterinary website requirements are evolving: review the applicable CMA order by business size and effective date before publication.

Two routes into veterinary referral care

  1. Home — referral or owner route
  2. Referral specialties
  3. For veterinary professionals
  4. For pet owners
  5. Our clinical teams
  6. Contact and referral guidance

Demo concept: The two-way referral map

toggle ‘I’m a vet’ and ‘I’m an owner’ to see distinct preparation checklists and appropriate contact instructions. No clinical notes are submitted through the demo.

Who this is for: Established referral hospitals, multispecialty clinics and veterinary groups that can provide accurate service and referral information.

What the £5,000 scope does not cover: £5,000 covers a marketing site and routing information. Clinical data transfer, hospital information systems, telemedicine and appointment platforms require separate secure integrations.

Questions about referrals and transparency

Can a referring vet send clinical notes through the website?

Only through an appropriately secured and approved referral channel. The standard marketing website can explain the route and link to an existing system.

What about upcoming transparency rules?

The project must verify which requirements apply to the specific practice and the relevant commencement date, rather than assuming one checklist fits every veterinary organisation.

Make the right route into your practice unmistakable.

Send the current website, the materials you already have and a brief description of the decision you want visitors to make. For qualifying standard marketing sites, the proposed package starts at £5,000 and can be scoped by email with no mandatory meeting. Email FiveK Studio.

A £5,000 standard website is an agreed marketing scope, not unlimited software development. The 72-hour build window is a proposed target once access, materials and approvals are complete. Everything can begin by email.
